You might remember a few weeks ago when we introduced you to a new way to approach website design and online marketing: User Centered Web Design. Just as a quick refresher, UCD approaches web design as an ongoing process. In a User Centered Web Design approach, websites are continuously updated every month, with substantive changes to keep your users engaged and moving through the buyer’s journey. It’s a three-step, ongoing process:
- Strategy: Develop overall goals for the site to measure success.
- Launch Pad: A functional, but slightly more minimal, site that’s launched in 1-3 months.
- Continuous Improvement: The site is continuously updated and modified, using feedback from the goals set in step 1.
In many ways, UCD is a vast improvement over traditional design:
1. Better ROI
The core of UCD is the strategy with clear goals. When you have defined goals vs. just a vague “we want more business,” it becomes infinitely easier to track ROI to make sure you’re getting your money’s worth.
2. It Moves a Lot Faster
A traditional design takes 6-12 months and often runs into delays and waiting. Traditional web design tries to shove web design and improvement into a limited timeframe. With User-Centered Web Design, you spread the work over several months. Because you’ll be improving the site later, you can launch a new site much more quickly (within 1-3 months).
3. Your Site is More Flexible
Because User-Centered Web Design is focused on meeting your goals, it has a much more flexible approach than standard web design. UCD encourages experimentation and trying different things to find something that sticks.
4. It Keeps Your Website Modern
One of the biggest challenges with traditional web design is that the internet continues to evolve while your website (more or less) stays stagnant. In traditional design, you only hang onto a website for a few years before it becomes outdated and it’s time for another redesign. With UCD, you’re constantly improving and can easily launch another launch pad site.
5. It Takes a Proactive Approach to Problem Solving
Your website host will make sure your website is up and running and will solve any technical issues that arise, but they won’t be able to give you feedback on how your site is performing. Are your forms getting filled out? Are people bouncing off your site quickly? These are the types of data UCD looks for and actively tries to tackle.
6. Better Reporting
Again, because UCD is focused on reaching the specific goals you set, accurate and detailed reporting is key. UCD goes beyond just looking at pageviews to look at user behavior and engagement.
7. Improved User Experience
UCD isn’t called “User-Centered Design” for nothing! It focuses on reaching your goals by giving your users a streamlined, easy approach. UCD prioritizes things like site speed, user interface improvements and mobile experience to ensure that your site is a crowd pleaser.
8. It’s Personalized to the User
UCD helps you reach your goals by taking data about your users and adapting the site to fit their needs. Changing calls-to-action, content offers, etc. to make data more valuable to your user and inspire them to take the actions you want them to.
9. It Creates Marketing Resources
Because UCD is equal parts web design and online marketing, one benefit is that you gain a library of online marketing resources you can continue to use in the future: from blogs, to social media posts, online ads and more.
10. Boost Conversions
The most important of all: UCD improves your number of conversions over traditional web design. Since the site is constantly evolving and adapating to your users’ desires, they’re more likely to fill out online forms or make a conversion.
Traditional web design is simply outdated. User-Centered Design is a proactive, adaptive strategy to web design that sees better results.
